The best way to detangle natural hair is with your fingers, especially if you wear your hair in a wash-and-go hairstyle. Also, a comb and fingers if your hair is styled in twists or braids for an extended period. But, first, use fingers only when detangling hair styled in a “Wash and Go.” Well, moisturized hair is required with this style making hair detangling a breeze. 

Next are twists or braids, where the hair detangling process is prolonged for extended periods. Hair styled in twists or braids makes it easy to manipulate your hair, preventing matting or potential breakage. So, dry finger detangling and combing is the best method. Therefore, before detangling dry hair, lightly mist hair with water, apply oil, then divide your hair into several units.

Should you detangle natural hair?

Unless you prefer a locked hairstyle detangling is a must. When I don’t adequately detangle my natural hair for extended periods, my hair begins to mat and starts locking. Detangling is essentially about removing loose, shredded, or broken strands.  

Finger detangling is best for tightly curly or coily hair. This detangling method is best for those who wear their hair in a wash-and-go, braided, or twisted style. Whereas wide-tooth combs or essential for loosely curled, wavy, or straightened hair types. 

Moreover, detangle your hair based on the kind of hairstyle you are trying to achieve. For example, remove shed hairs first with wide tooth combs or finger detangling. Then follow by using fine-tooth combs for sleek hairstyles such as buns or roller sets.  

How often should you detangle natural hair?

When I detangle natural hair, try to do it daily or whenever you wash your hair. When finger detangling frequently, the process is quick and goes smoothly. However, if you extend your hair detangling process more than a week, it a bit longer to remove shed hairs. 

Detangle natural hair without breakage.

Before you detangle natural hair, you want to make sure that your hair has an adequate amount of moisture. Hair lacking water is dry. Which means dry hair leads to knotting and breakage. Your hair does not have to be wet or freshly washed to detangle it. It needs enough water in it to prevent breakage. 

Product build-up is the primary culprit to stunted hair growth or breakage. Cleansing your hair will prevent product build-up, then follow-up with water and oiling for moisture retention.

How to detangle your natural hair?

Detangling your natural hair doesn’t have to be a daunting task. On the contrary, it is straightforward to do. Remember, if your hair has enough moisture in it, detangling should be a breeze.

If your hair is dehydrated, matted, or tangled, don’t be too quick to pour water on your hair. Instead, begin by lightly misting your hair with water, oiling, then braiding your hair in sections. Otherwise, you will have further tangling of your hair, which will lead to knotting and breakage.

Moreover, those who prefer to remove shedding strands with a comb try detangling your hair with your fingers first.

Step-by-Step process to detangling hair that has been left in a protective style for more than three days or is matted and tangled.  

  1.  First, lightly mist your hair with water, then begin oiling with oils such as coconut oil or olive oil. Then let the oil and water set for 10 to 15 minutes, giving enough time for your hair to absorb the water. 
  2. Next, divide your hair into 6 to 8 workable sections. 
  3. Take a loose one section of hair, start finger detangling or combing beginning at the ends of your hair.
  4. Now, start separating your hair, moving in an outward motion beginning at the top of your hair then working towards the ends. 
  5. Continue finger detangling or combing from the ends to the root of your hair.
  6. Braid or twist your hair, then continue with all sections of your hair.  
  7. Now your hair is detangled, you can begin the cleansing, moisturizing, and oiling process.  

Quick and easy steps to detangling “Wash and Wear” hair.

  1. In the sink or shower, water over your hair until it is thoroughly wet. 
  2. Apply your conditioner of choice until your hair is saturated.
  3.  Next, squeeze the conditioner into your hair, finger detangle removing shed hairs, then rinse. 
  4. While your hair is still wet, apply your hairstyler if using, followed by your oils of choice.
  5. Now, dry your hair with a towel or cloth and then style. 

Detangle natural hair is easy to do and is the best way to prevent damaging your hair. With proper detangling, your hair will be healthy and continue to grow.
